Carolee Schneemann – Honorary Artist 2015

Carolee Schneemann (1939) is a multidisciplinary visionary feminist performance artist. She transformed the definition of art, especially discourse on the body, sexuality, and gender. The history of her work is characterised by research into archaic visual traditions, pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos, the body of the artist in dynamic relationship with the social body.
MS. Schneemann in her work “Eye Body #11,” 1963. “In 1963,” she said, “to use my body as an extension of my painting-constructions was to challenge and threaten the psychic territorial power lines by which women were admitted to the Art Stud Club.
