Anna Þorvaldsdóttir

(IS)

Anna Thorvaldsdottir (b. 1977) has attracted worldwide attention in recent years for her effective orchestral works characterized by, among other things, powerful structures and unique sensitivity, and a deep sense of texture, nuance and colour. Anna’s sonic landscape is comparable to natural phenomena and she has described the need to seek ideas and inspiration in the movement, shape and force of nature. Early in the creative process Anna secures the outline or overall concept behind the work on paper in the form of drawings or sketches; drawings containing personal codes that the composer uses as a mnemonic device in the composition of the work. Sequences IX presents two such drawings, on the one hand a draft of METACOSMOS, commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2018, and on the other AION, commissioned and premiered by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir and Iceland Dance Company in 2019. AION will be performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and dancers of the Iceland Dance Company in Eldborg, Harpa, on April 1st, 2020.
